Bay County Disc Golf Club's 'Root for Bay' initiative planted trees native to the area — cypress, black cherry, oak, and more — at the course.

The club partnered with the Root for Bay Initiative to plant 200 native Florida trees at Majette Park, restoring canopy lost to Hurricane Michael. President Brent Gann: "the disc golf community has come together and has really been focused on planting a lot of trees to do some reforestation."

Concrete tee pads went in on the disc golf course, the first of a run of park improvements. Bay County Parks Division manager Vincent Martin: "This is just the start. We're adding more playgrounds, more restroom facilities, and eventually a smaller amphitheater."

County officials sought public input on the roughly 400-acre park, which already holds the disc golf course, walking trails, and RC boat ponds, with plenty of unused space still to plan for.

Ahead of a public workshop at the Majette Park Community Center, a look at the site's path from landfill to golf course to the park that now holds the disc golf course.

Parks and Recreation began a master plan for the 300-acre site — an old landfill, then Majette Dunes Golf Course, now home to the disc golf course — weighing pickleball courts, mountain bike trails, playgrounds, and sports fields for the open land.

The club's fifth annual Monster Mash — the longest-running Halloween disc golf tournament in Northwest Florida — drew nearly 100 people for a costume contest, Halloween-decorated course, and charity fundraising for the Gulf Coast Children's Advocacy Center.

78 players opened the season at Majette. President Brent Gann: "We get a lot of new folks for this one, so the kick-off is great because we get a lot of people who haven't been involved or recently moved here."

The 3rd Annual Northwest Florida Disc Golf Championship ran as a two-day B-Tier at Majette — amateur and junior divisions on Saturday, the pro divisions on Sunday — the biggest weekend of disc golf the club had put on.

The third annual Monster Mash — already the longest-running Halloween disc golf tournament in Northwest Florida — drew 90 athletes from multiple states across three layouts, with world number 7 Matt Orum in the field, a decorated course, a costume contest and a mustache contest.

Local disc golfers played three rounds at the 2022 Majette Iron Man, raising over $2,000 for the HOPE Project, a local nonprofit supporting veterans.

The second annual Northwest Florida Disc Golf Championship drew 90 players aged 10 to 60, including pros and travellers from as far as Michigan and Belize. Players lined up before the Saturday morning start hoping to fill an open spot.

Neal Dambra came to Panama City for the Bay County Kick Off and told the club's whole story: founded months before Hurricane Michael took the county's six courses to zero, kept alive on a cleaned-up par-2 campus course, reunited by the 2019 putting pub crawl, and gut-punched again by Covid. By then the club had run 10 PDGA-sanctioned tournaments and four league seasons in two years, and raised over $4,000 for the Gulf Coast Children's Advocacy Center and The Hope Project. The piece also introduced the Squid Squad, the club's dry-suited disc recovery unit, and called hole 10 "one of the best par 5s I've ever had the chance to play in competition."

The No. 8 ranked disc golfer in the world, Matthew Orum, competed in the annual Bay County Kickoff tournament at the Majette course, making his second appearance after winning the second annual Monster Mash in October.

Jackson County broke ground on a free course at Citizen's Lodge Park in Marianna, designed by Thomas Anderson. County volunteers raised about $6,000 and the county matched it; before this, the nearest free course meant driving to Dothan, Tallahassee, or Panama City.

Our part in it: Bay County Disc Golf supported the Jackson County club as they got started — Webb Warren shared course design insight, and Brent Gann advised on running events and setting up the organization. Growing the sport in the region means helping the clubs around us stand up their own courses.
